let it go

the city is never asleep, yet the air far too silent to be normal. they told her to release you, but no one understands that she can't. they don't see that she can't bear it any more, everyone is blind to each other's feelings. where's her my happy ending? why can't she just muster the courage to ask you?
fear is a just an obstacle, they say. you need only the courage to overcome it.
but really, fear is a feeling parallel to longing. it overcomes you, destroys you, consumes you but you can never truly reach equilibrium with it. you can't forget it.
it'll always be in your grasp, but can't catch it-- and you never will.
the sparkling lights can't lull her to oblivion anymore, she can't lie to herself any longer. maybe next time she's outside she'll search a little bit harder in the crowd for your face, but in the recesses of her mind she knows that you've already let go.
so maybe it was time for her to as well.
